past	langs, voorbij, over

Along is langs in lengterichting. Kuieren langs een kanaal duurt even. Loopt u past iets, een gebouw bijvoorbeeld, dan loopt u er aan voorbij. Dat gaat doorgaans een stuk sneller. Zie voor verdere betekenisnuance en idioom hieronder:

• If you walk along the canal, and turn right at the Theatre, you will find our office.
• His admission of guilt came as no surprise: the press had suspected it all along.
• The vessel was loaded with a cutter dredger, along with some smaller maritime equipment.
• The client just phoned; she wanted to know how the work was coming along.
• A second inquiry along these lines showed that security on the platform had been slack.
• Go down this corridor, past the coffee machine and it’s the third office on the right.
• I’ll meet you at quarter past three. (UK)
• I’ll meet you at a quarter after three. (US)
• You will find the General Post Office on your right, past the bridge.

N.B.1 past betekent ook geleden: That was three weeks past = That was three weeks ago

N.B.2 the past betekent het verleden.
